More SFA Traditions The Axe Handle Ole Cotton Homecoming Bonfire Purple Haze The Axe Handle SFA freshmen receive an axe handle to personalize with their own Lumberjack spirit. Students can be seen (and heard) banging axe handles on the bleachers at SFA football games. Ole Cotton Ole Cotton is an imposing 75mm cannon that fires a celebratory shot every time the SFA Lumberjack football team scores. The SFA ROTC cadets man Ole Cotton just beyond the south end zone at Homer Bryce Stadium. The powerful blast can be heard – and often felt – all over town. The Homecoming Bonfire SFA’s traditional bonfire and pep rally are the centerpieces of homecoming. Usually held in October, homecoming is a series of traditions that bring Lumberjacks together to celebrate SFA. Other events include homecoming elections, Duck Dash, downtown parade, football games and much more. Austin State University’s Department of Economics and Finance in the Rusche College of Business, presents students with monetary awards — many donated by Nacogdoches-area financial institutions — during an April 17 ceremony. SFA economics and finance students receive awards from local financial institutions Stephen F. Austin State University’s chapter of the Bilingual Education Student Organization, dedicated to the professional development of bilingual educators, was honored during the Texas Association for Bilingual Education’s Unity Through Excellence Award at the 2024 BESO Spring Leadership Institute. SFA’s Bilingual Education Student Organization honored by Texas Association for Bilingual Education Bruce and Tonya Huber opened Huber Gardens at 1532 County Road 713 on about 10 acres of land six miles west of downtown Nacogdoches in June 2023 with the help of Stephen F.
